John, You should not copy any license activation files between Macs for Office 2016. Microsoft developers on the MacAdmins Microsoft Slack channel have warned against doing this.

It only currently works because of a bug. They have stated they will eventually fix this bug and which will break this method. The volume licensing is based on the serial number of the hard drive, IIRC, making it unique to each Mac. If you are a Volume License customer you can download the latest Office 2016 DMG from Microsoft's Volume Licensing Website which includes a standalone Volume Serializer installer that you can push out to each Mac to correctly serialize your Macs.
