This is one of our local favourites. It's an olde-wordle type hotel; this review is about the restaurant in it. The restaurant - and adjacent, very atmospheric bar - is of the wooden beams, huge inglenook fireplaces and blazing log fires that are just the best places to be when the weather takes a wintry turn. The staff were efficient, friendly and helpful on our visit (the lady who runs the bar is as much a fixture as the pumps; she's been there for 15 years), despite the restaurant being reasonably busy as were a couple of the private rooms. My wife and I had exactly the same meal - spicy crab cakes, local venison and creme caramel; with a nice bin-end red.
I enjoyed a Calvados with our coffees, by the fire in the bar. Lovely evening. It's not the Savoy, it's not the Fat Duck; it is a really good, best-in-the-area sort of local place that everywhere should have. This hotel is fantastic.
How many hotels can you stay at where there's a document about the building dating back two hundred years on the wall of your room? The old oak beams and sloping floors add to the charm. Smartplant P&id Iso 15926.
If you like character, history and romance this place is for you, if you like a modern, square box for your room, this place probably isn't! The new menu and restaurant refurbishment has made a great improvement and the food is delicious. The staff are helpful and un-stuffy.
They helped me choose some great wines which were reasonably priced that I'd probably not had the confidence to choose alone. The breakfasts were lovely with locally-sourced produce in abundance. The Spa is wonderful and was not busy. I did not have a treatment but some who did said they were great. The pool, spa bath, sauna and steam room are great assets and at this time of year when warmth and light are not features of the British weather, they were most welcome.
